Lady Antebellum’s latest single is the fun, upbeat jam, “Champagne Night.” But as Memorial Day approaches, they are reminded of how “What I’m Leaving For” became such a special song for a lot of military families with loved ones who are serving away from home. When Lady Antebellum first heard the demo for the song, Dave Haywood recalls, “Oh, it just wrecked me.”
Of course, for the band hears the song through the filter of being touring musicians, who leave their families for several days at a time to play shows. But then, Dave says, “I sent it to my brother-in-law who served a couple of tours in Afghanistan and he was like, ‘Oh my God.’”
While the song resonates with Lady Antebellum because of the nature of their job, and as Dave says, “It’s so present with where we are,” he recognizes that “There are those that serve that really tour for a duration that’s way longer than we ever do. And so it resonates with that crowd, and I think it hit a lot of people in that way.”
Not to mention, Lady Antebellum realizes the immense sacrifices our military men and women are voluntarily making for our country and our freedom, and they are forever grateful, especially for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
