(AUDIO) Charles Esten Loves the Drama of NASHVILLE and Will Eventually Do More Comedy

A lot of people may not know that Charles Esten, who plays Deacon Clayborne on ABC’s Nashville, actually got his start in comedy, doing stand-up and performing on the improv show, Whose Line Is It Anyway. While the story lines on Nashville tend to be full of drama, Charles says, “I am loving every bit of what I get to do right now and although it’s a drama, if you look carefully there’s comedy all the way through out it. I firmly believe that the best comedies have something serious or meaningful in them and the best dramas better have something a little funny otherwise it becomes mellow drama. There’s great moments where the tension’s broken in the show constantly, even with Deacon. So, I got all I need right now and I’m lovin’ every bit of it.”

Charles says one day in the future he will do some more true comedy projects, but for now fans can catch him as the dramatic Deacon, on Nashville, every Wednesday at 10/9p CT on ABC.

Nashville – Charles Esten doing comedy :47
“I’ve done comedy for a long, long time, especially with ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’. I actually stared trying standup ‘cause that’s the first thing you can really get up on stage and do. They won’t let you just walk into a movie, generally. And from that I went to the improv and did ‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway’ and a lot of sitcoms and that type of thing. But, I am loving every bit of what I get to do right now and although it’s a drama, if you look carefully there’s comedy all the way through out it. I firmly believe that the best comedies have something serious or meaningful in them and the best dramas better have something a little funny otherwise it becomes mellow drama. There’s great moments where the tension’s broken in the show constantly, even with Deacon. So, I got all I need right now and I’m lovin’ every bit of it. Will I do comedy in the future? Absolutely, and I can’t wait to see what that is.”
