(AUDIO) Jennifer Nettles Finds Musical Balance With Brandy Clark On Boundary Pushing New Album

Jennifer Nettles co-wrote her latest single and much of her new album with fellow artist, Brandy Clark, and she says, “I am such a fan of hers, as a songwriter, she is just a gangsta, and then I became a big fan girl love of her when we went on the road. She went on the road with me for the ‘That Girl’ tour.”

Jennifer loves that she and Brandy bring different perspectives and sounds to the writing room. She says, “I find she has a little bit more of a traditional leaning to her than I do and she comes from the northwest. I come from the southeast, so we are all the way stretched across. I come from the swamp and I have a lot of gospel and blues influence with that and she’s from up there in the northwest and her musical legacy is one that she’s taken in a much more traditional route, as a songwriter. And for me being able to write with her I thought was such an interesting and successful merging and meshing of two different styles that allows this music to give a nod to what is the traditional at times, but also then celebrate something that is fresh and has an edge to it and makes it something new.”

“Unlove You,” Jennifer’s latest single, is the first release off her new album, Playing with Fire. Jennifer chose the album title because she liked the theme of the title track. She says, “It celebrates pushing oneself to her boundaries and outside of her comfort zone and embracing the parts of herself that aren’t perfect and realizing that those are the things that make her unique, those sorts of things I find throughout the record.”

Playing with Fire will be available this Friday.

Jennifer Nettles – Playing with Fire Title :47
“I think, thematically, that specific song in how it celebrates pushing oneself to her boundaries and outside of her comfort zone and embracing the parts of herself that aren’t perfect and realizing that those are the things that make her unique, those sorts of things I find throughout the record. I also find the theme of fire throughout the record and that is because from an inspiration standpoint, as a writer, fire as an element is super transformative and I feel like I have been, and am going, through a transformation. So, you get that theme a lot throughout the record. So I thought both contextually the song and because it added the element of fire, I felt like it was a good representation of the album.”
