(AUDIO) Trent Harmon Never Got Too Comfortable On American Idol

Trent Harmon was name the 15th and final winner of American Idol, and he credits his victory to never resting on his laurels. No matter how great he performed the week before, Trent says, “I knew that I could not ever, ever, ever get comfortable. The second that I got comfortable, I knew I’d get cut.”

In fact, every time his phone rang with a Southern California number, he thought it was someone calling to tell him he was off the show. Trent says, “I would just keep that chip on my shoulder at all times that you can go home just like anybody else,” because he realized there was so much more to winning American Idol than just being a great singer. He says, “There’s so many intangibles to American Idol. It’s 10% singing. It’s loving on folks, talking to people, being nice to every human that you come into contact with, not because you want them to vote for you but just because. ‘Cause that’s what American Idol is. That’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Keeping that attitude helped Trent win American Idol, and now he’s got his first single, “Falling,” available on iTunes.

“I knew that I could not ever, ever, ever get comfortable. The second that I got comfortable, I knew I’d get cut. So at every moment, every time my phone would ring, every time a 310 number would (come up), I would think I was getting cut. I would just keep that chip on my shoulder at all times that you can go home just like anybody else. There’s so many intangibles to American Idol. It’s 10% singing. It’s loving on folks, talking to people, being nice to every human that you come into contact with, not because you want them to vote for you but just because. Cause that’s what American Idol is.
