Jennifer Nettles’ latest single, “Unlove You,” is a powerful, emotional ballad, but that certainly doesn’t represent all of what fans will hear if they listen to her latest album, Playing with Fire. She says, “If you love ‘Unlove You’, you will find some of that, especially emotionally and vocally, you will find some more of that on this album. But that’s not all! You will find a lot of diversity, really, I think, on this album.”
Production-wise and sonically, Jennifer says, where her That Girl album was much more sparse and organic, Playing with Fire “Is layered and big and rich and much like an oil painting in its layers in that sense that it’s just layers upon layers. It’s a big sound.”
Subject matter-wise, Jennifer says, “I think you really get a bit of a slice of, sort of, where I am in my journey right now, as a woman, I think there’s a ton of sass and fun and levity on it, but there is just as much gravity and searching and pain. And that pretty much sounds like life, doesn’t it?”

Jennifer Nettles – beyond Unlove You 1:04
“The interesting part of putting out a first single is that it’s isolated, and you sort of get it in a vacuum without a proper context. So, I would say, if you love ‘Unlove You’, you will find some of that, especially emotionally and vocally, you will find some more of that on this album. But that’s not all! You will find a lot of diversity, really, I think, on this album. From a musical standpoint, sonically, how it feels is layered and big and rich and much like an oil painting in its layers in that sense that it’s just layers upon layers. It’s a big sound. And especially in comparison to my last project, ‘That Girl’, which was much more sparse and organic. And then in terms of context, I think you really get a bit of a slice of, sort of, where I am in my journey right now, as a woman, I think there’s a ton of sass and fun and levity on it, but there is just as much gravity and searching and pain. And that pretty much sounds like life, doesn’t it?”
