The first time Brantley Gilbert ever met Andrew DeRoberts, the guy he co-wrote “The Weekend” with, was after he completed The Devil Don’t Sleep and he held a listening party with all of the writers on the album.  It turns out Brantley and Andrew wrote “The Weekend” and one other song on the album entirely over the phone without ever meeting his co-writer in person. He explains, “Kos Weaver was at Warner Chapel when I first came to Nashville. He signed me to my first publishing deal and he and I still keep in contact.  On this record I wanted to try some new things and one of those things was writing to tracks.  And I asked him if he had anybody that was putting tracks together that he thought I might dig. And he sent me two and both of them made the record.  Both of them were tracks that Andrew DeRoberts put together.”

It was the first time Brantley had ever written a song over the phone, and the first time he wrote to tracks, but he enjoyed it and he thinks Andrew is a truly talented songwriter, so chances are it won’t be the last time he writes that way.

The first time I shook hands with Andrew was at a listening party we had for writers who had co-written songs with me that made the record. He’s a truly, truly talented songwriter just an amazing guy all together. But yeah that was a new process for me.”
