Midland is feeling pretty lucky these days with a number one debut single and a new album, which was just named the Best Country Album of 2017 by the Washington Post. While much of their success is a result of their hard work and talent, the guys in Midland have a few good luck charms and superstitions that they’ve relied on as well. Jess Carson says, “I usually don’t but I did find a – right in like the crossroads of the backstage of Gillette, you know the two main halls come together right dead center was a heads up penny and I put it in my pocket and it’s been in there.”
Since Jess found that penny before their song went number one, Cameron Duddy hopes that he will hang onto it and he adds that he relied on his own superstition as “Drinkin’ Problem” was making its way up the chart. He says, “I didn’t change my socks for a month going into the single going #1, much to everybody’s displeasure.”
Mark Wystrach also has a lucky charm, but he admits it may be hazardous to his health. “My dad gave me this fugazi gold watch. I think I’m allergic to it, like whatever it is. Look at the rash on my hand. My dad gave this to me when I moved out to California many years ago and when he gave it to me I was just like horrified. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m never gonna wear that.’ It’s not the real deal. It’s clearly a fake. You know there’s like spots in it, you can see where the water’s gotten in it, you can see where the fake diamonds are falling and collecting in the corner. And it’s been stuck at 9:59 for the last four years, but it’s from my dad and it just reminds me of the struggle that he’s been through and how big of a role he’s played in my life and what a big supporter he is so yeah, I wear it even though I kinda irritates my skin.”
If Midland’s good fortune continues with their brand new single, “Make A Little,” they may never get rid of that lucky penny, dirty socks or fugazi watch.
