Before coming together to form Midland, Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson were all leading pretty successful lives, Mark as an actor and a model, Cameron as a video director for people like Bruno Mars and Jennifer Lopez, and Jess owned a vintage clothing store. Some people might wonder why they would give it all up for the uncertainty of starting a music career, but Cameron explains, “It was just the calling. It doesn’t happen for everybody when you get this, like overwhelming sense of duty to do something. And for all of us it was that and it overrode any prior success or lifestyles that we had been living in California, which was pretty kick ass.”
Not to mention, sometimes life is about taking chances and experiencing new things. “Life’s a carnival,” says Cameron. “As The Band said, you know, you don’t just hop on one ride and do it for four hours, you kind of want to experience everything. And that for us is this journey. You know we want the most out of life. We all could have stayed doing what was obvious, I guess maybe just a path of least resistance for us back in California and wherever we were before Midland, but this was the calling and it was overwhelming and I don’t think anybody was strong enough to deny the urge to kind of follow this thing.”
Fortunately, for Midland, the calling has paid off. They’re about to release their third single, “Burn Out,” off their debut album, On the Rocks.
