When Tyler Rich was in high school, he was in a band, which he admits was bad because they never rehearsed. It was in that band that he started writing songs, so we wondered if he remembered what the first song he wrote was about. Tyler says, “Oh my God, probably about some girlfriend I thought I was going to marry. Man, that’s a question. It was called ‘Alibi.’”
Even though “Alibi” was not a good song, all these years later, Tyler says, “I’ve probably written two or three [songs] that terrible last month, at least. You start listening back you’re like, ‘Why did I turn this in?’”
Tyler has definitely written plenty of songs that he thinks are great until he listens to them the next day. He says, “It’s kind of like beer goggles. You’re out and you start drinking and you’re like, ‘Oh my god, this girl’s going to be the love of my life,’ because you’re just so caught up in the moment. And then the next day you’re like, ‘What was I thinking?’ And you write a song and you’re like, ‘This is it! This is a hit.’ And the next day you’re like, ‘I don’t ever want to play guitar again.’”
Fortunately, Tyler’s songwriting has gotten much better since high school, so he has much fewer songwriting beer goggles moments these days.
