The Battle Rounds kick off tonight on The Voice, which means Thomas Rhett will be joining the show for the next couple of weeks as a guest mentor for Team Kelly Clarkson. TR actually filmed his part of the show back in August, and he says, “It was really cool to get in there with people that were from so many different backgrounds, you know. There were people in there that have never played a show in their life. There were people in there that had been touring for 10 years. So you had to adapt your advice based on the story that you knew from those people.”
Having learned a lot about singing and performing on the job through trial and error, Thomas says, “It was really nice to be able to kinda put on my artist hat and try to portray advice that I have learned from honestly, just a bunch of error, and get to help them out in that way.”
Besides the fact that Thomas has known Blake Shelton since he was a kid, so it was fun to go up against him and his team, Thomas is a big fan of Kelly Clarkson’s. He says, “I’d only met Kelly one other time honestly. And when she invited me to come on that show I was very honored because I’ve always been such a huge fan of Kelly. One of the most phenomenal, flawless voices that I’ve ever heard.”
He was often blown away and left speechless by her raw, natural talent. Thomas says, “Obviously her records are great, but even when you’re just sitting in a room with Kelly and she just starts riffing to try to describe how she wants something to be sung and she looks at me and she’s like, ‘What do you think?’ And I’m like, ‘I think you just said it perfectly. I don’t even know how to add to that.’”
Watch Thomas help mentor Team Kelly tonight and tomorrow night, plus next Monday and Tuesday, on The Voice on NBC.
Thomas Rhett – The Voice offering advice :34
“It was really cool to get in there with people that were from so many different backgrounds, you know. There were people in there that have never played a show in their life. There were people in there that had been touring for 10 years. So you had to adapt your advice based on the story that you knew from those people. And I feel like if I was in their shoes I would have been absolutely terrified to be singing in front of Kelly Clarkson, and they got in there and just destroyed it. And it was really nice to be able to kinda put on my artist hat and try to portray advice that I have learned from honestly, just a bunch of error, and get to help them out in that way, whether it’s performing or whether going higher or going lower, helping with the band or arrangements. And it was a really, really cool, different thing I’ve never gotten to do before.”
