Even before Tyler Rich had a record deal, he focused a lot of his energy to building his social media platforms one follower at a time, whether it was walking up and down lines at his shows and asking people to follow him, or reaching out on Instagram or Twitter and personally inviting people to follow him. When asked why he put such a priority on social media, Tyler said, “People just don’t understand that you have the ability today to sit and have a relationship with fans—from your bedroom, from the bus, from the van, like anything you want to do, and people aren’t utilizing it. You don’t have to walk up and down the line anymore and do face time.”
For younger artists who are just getting started, Tyler says, “You can go on to an Instagram post of a venue, and I guarantee you the people that ‘liked’ that picture or commented are the people that were at that show, and if that show is something that relates to you and artists that you sound like or resemble, go and talk to those people. ‘Like’ their pictures on Instagram. ‘Follow’ them if you want to do, whatever you need to.”
Tyler loves being able to communicate with his fans about his live shows and his music, like his latest single, “The Difference,” and he says, “Snapchat and Instagram, it’s almost like you can text fans back and forth. You can have conversations and never even give out your phone number. It’s fantastic.”
