Several of Midland’s songs center around a guy drinking in a bar, like their #1 hit “Drinkin’ Problem,” or their latest single, “Burn Out,” but Cameron Duddy explains, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for the deeper meaning of each song. “There’s a romance to all the characters in our songs,” says Cameron. “We love movies. We’re huge movie fans and culture consumers, and the lonely cowboy sitting at a bar, it’s as American as … as a cowboy sitting at a bar by himself … as an eagle. It’s not about the drink. That’s the top layer of everything, is the alcohol. It’s the imagery that comes with the song. That’s the spirit and power of it.”
In other words, the alcohol just happens to be a common denominator in the scene of their characters, but it’s the emotion and the story behind what finds him sitting in the bar in the first place that is the real heart of their songs.
