Brantley Gilbert co-wrote his latest single, “What Happens in a Small Town,” and he definitely relied on personal experience, from the days that he and his wife Amber were dating and had broken up. He says, “It’s definitely an Amber thing. I feel like as a songwriter we all have to go to a place in our own heart, really to write a song like this. And for me it’s always her.”
One thing Brantley learned during those days trying to outrun Amber’s memory when they were broken up is that whether he hung around their small town or went halfway across the country, there was no escaping her. He says, “I spent so much time on the road that I knew that wherever you went it followed ya. Leaving wouldn’t have done a thing for it. Cause I spent enough time on the road to know that it followed me everywhere I went. But I think most of us have that breakup that’s a pain in the ass … not my wife, the breakup part.”
“What Happens in a Small Town” is the first release off Brantley’s next album, which he’ll be releasing later this year.
