Midland’s brand of country music is definitely on the more traditional end of the spectrum, with honkytonk hits like “Drinkin’ Problem” and their new song, “Mr. Lonely,” and they’re flattered if people consider them one of the torchbearers of more traditional sounding country music in the modern era. “It’s an honor,” says Jess Carson. “I mean, you know, there’s a lot of talk about pendulums and things like that. To be honest, like, we formed this band, this sound, the aesthetic, everything, in Texas and we played in honky-tonks and we were blessed enough that there was people in Nashville that wanted to take a chance on it.”
From their music to their clothing to their on stage presence, Midland’s sound and style is a throwback to the late 70’s and early 80’s, and their sound may not be for everybody, but they’re okay with that. Jess says, “We’ve had some success and we’re just going to keep doing what we do, you know. And I think there’s gonna be people out there that like it and some people that don’t.”
So far, people are loving “Mr. Lonely,” which is the first release off Midland’s next album, which they’ll release later this year.
