Among the members of Lady Antebellum they have six kids under the age of five, and Charles Kelley says, “I think that our kids have no understanding that this is a very unique upbringing. I mean my son, I think he asked like a cousin, ‘What color tour bus does your daddy have?’ It’s like, ‘Ward!’ I mean he’s only three. But it really is funny it’s such a unique thing.”
Thinking about how their kids’ understanding of their life might be a little skewed, Charles recalls a funny story he heard from another artist. “Karen Fairchild from (Little Big Town) told me the most hilarious story about her son getting upset because they didn’t have a robe with his name on it, and they did at the last two hotels he was in there. Because sometimes these hotels, you know, you go back to the same ones, and I was like, ‘That is gonna be Ward going, ‘There’s no chocolate covered strawberries?’ And I’m like oh my gosh! So it’s gonna be a constant struggle to make sure they realize that this is a unique thing, and to have a perspective and appreciate what it all means.”
One thing most kids don’t get to experience is hearing their parents on the radio, but Ward loves Lady Antebellum’s new song, “What If I Never Get Over You,” and often requests to hear “Hillary and Dave and your song, daddy.”
