(AUDIO) JUSTIN MOORE EXPLAINS HOW HIS MOM INSPIRED HIS NEW SONG, “WHY WE DRINK”

Justin Moore has chosen “Why We Drink” as his next single, and he usually introduces the song in concert by saying it was inspired by his mom, which always gets a laugh, but he says, “I feel like I need to elaborate so that’s not just what’s put out there.”

Justin and his wife Kate live a few hundred feet away from his mom and dad, and they actually like spending time with them, so every now and then they’ll go on a double date with his parents.  His dad is always the designated driver because he doesn’t drink, so one night when they were out, “I ordered a drink and then, I don’t know, three or four more or something like that,” says Justin. “My mom goes, ‘Why you drink so much?’ I go, ‘Well, it never occurred to me that I shouldn’t. I never found a reason not to.’”

Justin instantly had an idea to write a song about it, and so he brought it to his co-writers, David Lee Murphy, Casey Beathard and Jeremy Stover, and almost instantly – and Justin preface’s by saying, “David Lee goes — and I do a terrible David Lee impression — but DLM goes, ‘Cause it’s Friday, cause it’s Monday.’  I’m like ‘Yes! For every reason!’ So we sat down (and) we had a lot of fun with that one.”

“Why We Drink” is the follow-up to Justin’s #1 song, “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” off his latest album, Late Nights and Longnecks.

Justin Moore – writing Why We Drink

“That was a funny story how that song came about. I’ve been introducing it in concert by saying it was a drinking song inspired by my mom. So, I feel like I need to elaborate so that’s not just what’s put out there. We live close to my mom and dad and we’re close to them, and so periodically we get babysitters for the kids, the four of us go to dinner or something.  So a year or two ago, we’re at, I don’t know, Chili’s or Friday’s or something like that – and my dad drives cause he don’t drink and the rest of us do – so I ordered a drink and then, I don’t know, three or four more or something like that. My mom goes, ‘Why you drink so much?’ I go, ‘Well, it never occurred to me that I shouldn’t. I never found a reason not to.’  And so, anyway, we were laughing about it and so I had this idea to write a song called ‘Why We Drink.’ I don’t know, why do we all drink? And what we arrived at was for a lot of reasons, and every reason just about. And so, David Lee goes — and I do a terrible David Lee impression — but DLM goes, ‘Cause it’s Friday, cause it’s Monday.’  I’m like ‘Yes! For every reason!’ So we sat down, we had a lot of fun with that one.”
