These days with so many artists also writing songs and singing the demos for other people to record, Mike Eli, the lead singer of Eli Young Band admits that sometimes hearing a demo of a song they’re going to record can absolutely be intimidating. “There’s a song that we did on 10,000 Towns called ‘Moon on Fire’ that was a Chris Stapleton write,” recalls Mike. “And his demo on that song was just, I mean, out of this world. He has this range that is absolutely incredible, and creating that emotion that his voice can create.”
Anytime Mike hears a demo sung so exceptionally well, one of the challenges when he records the song is to make sure he doesn’t just copy it. He says, “Finding that space and trying to find a way to sing it as me instead of Chris Stapleton was a challenge. But it ended up being incredible and one I was really proud of it. But some of these songwriters really knock this stuff out of the park and you want to do it justice at the same time as making it your own.”
We’re certain the writers of Eli young Band’s latest single, “Break It In,” (Benjy Davis, Brandon Day, Daniel Ross, and Michael Whitworth) would agree that Mike and the band definitely did justice to their song.
