Brett Young will be among the performers on tomorrow night’s CMA Country Christmas special on ABC. When it came to choosing which song to perform, Brett says, “We went around with the song choice a little bit. Did a Christian song last year. I grew up in church, my dad’s a pastor. The year before, I released a Christian song, a different one (‘O Holy Night’), and that is my heart.”
This year Brett decided to lean on his love and influence of soul and R&B music and he says, “As we were going back and forth, I know I’m just thought of as like, kind of the balladeer. That is where I naturally gravitate, but I grew up on all kinds of music, and so there’s a Donny Hathaway version of ‘This Christmas’ that I’ve always been a big fan of, so I’m gonna try not to shame him tonight.”
We have confidence that Donny would have been proud of Brett’s performance, had he been around to hear it. You can watch CMA Country Christmas Tuesday night at 9/8c on ABC.
