(AUDIO) BRETT YOUNG LOVES THE CAMARADERIE OF WATCHING THE SONG CHARTS

As an artist of a songwriter, watching your song climb the charts can be an exciting, emotional and exhausting thing if you focus on it too much.  That’s why Brett Young, who just celebrated his sixth single, “Catch,” becoming his sixth number one song, says, “I used to say I would never watch the charts. Then we got our first number one and the charts got really fun to watch.”

Some people watch their song on the charts obsessively, and know exactly where it’s at and what number it was last week, and how many places it moved up or down this week.  Brett says, “I probably don’t as much as some people, but it’s fun and it becomes more fun when the other writers on the song are friends of yours. Every Monday when a new chart comes out there’s a group text and everybody’s getting excited and offering to buy each other beers, or whatever it may be.”

Fortunately for Brett, he’s been able to watch every song he’s ever released as a single make it to #1 on the charts, and he says, “There’s obviously something really special about a song that does well on the charts, but also it’s like you root for each other all the time.  And so as excited as the artist to have the song doing well, there’s more to it than just that. You know, if it’s doing well on the charts it means the fans are enjoying it. So, a chart watcher, but maybe not for all the reasons people would expect.”

Brett just released his brand new song called “Lady,” which he wrote with Ross Copperman and Jon Nite, which means it’s time to start a new group text, as they watch the song make its way up the charts.
