Throughout their career, Lady A has worked with several high-profile producers, including Paul Worley, Nathan Chapman and busbee, but for their eighth and current album, Ocean, they opted to work with Dan Huff for the first time, who has produced albums for everybody from Keith Urban, Thomas Rhett, Brett Young and Kane Brown to Kid Rock, Megadeath, Lionel Richie and Bon Jovi. The relationship proved to be a good one, resulting in their critically acclaimed Ocean album.
The time Lady A spent with Dann was more than just a working relationship. Hillary Scott says, “The family aspect of it just was so beautiful.”
Dave Haywood explains, “That producer role is really a part of the family. I mean, he was the person we spent six months with, non-stop. I mean, he was the fourth member of the band for half a year working on this album. So, that’s a special role to be that close. And like Hillary said, he was totally a part of our family and it was a wonderful fit.”
Ocean has been hailed as Lady A’s most personal and vulnerable album, which is why Charles Kelley says it definitely helped that Dann “was very patient.”
Lady A discovered their latest single, “Champagne Night,” when they appeared on the NBC show Songland, which happened after they had released Ocean, so it is not on the current project. But the trio felt like it was the perfect summer song, and before their tour was cancelled due to Covid-19, they felt like it would be the perfect addition to their live show, which is why they chose to release it ahead of other tracks on the Oceanalbum.
