When Lady A appeared on Songland, they had four songs to choose from to record to become one of their own, and according to Dave Haywood, “When we got to hear all four of the songs, we loved ‘em all. There was one that started to stand out a little bit. It was called ‘I’ll Drink to That’ by Madeline Merlo.”
Each of the hopeful songwriters teamed up with one of the expert songwriters on the panel to refine their song, and Dave says, “We ended up giving (‘I’ll Drink to That) to Shane McAnally and tweaked it a little bit on the spot, and then they finished it and it was called ‘Champagne Night.’”
Of course, the song is now Lady A’s latest single, and Dave says, “It’s been so much fun. It’s such a summer jam. I mean, when we first heard it on the show, we thought, ‘Oh, we need this for our tour.’ This needs to be that kind of song that opens the show or Hillary has a big moment with all our girls kinda doin’ that kinda moment in the show, just a really fun summer song.”
Unfortunately, Lady A’s tour, along with everybody else’s, got cancelled shortly after the appeared on Songland, but they know when they finally do get to get back on stage, “Champagne Night” will be a great moment in their live show, and according to Dave, “This may be one that’s in the Lady A catalog until the end of the time. I mean, it’s an awesome song and it’s such a perfect one for the way that we set up our live show.”
