(AUDIO) THE PANDEMIC MAY HAVE HELPED THOMAS RHETT’S DESIRE TO CHANGE HIS MUSIC BUSINESS MODEL

NEW SINGLE: “What’s Your Country Song”

Thomas Rhett writes so many songs, that he would love to be able to release them to fans as fast as he writes them.  Every time we finish a song that we’re hyped about, I’ll be like, ‘Jessie, master it and put it out right now,’ admits Thomas.  And he says, “If I could do that, I would do it.’

But Thomas knows there’s a method to the madness of building up anticipation for new music, and having a marketing strategy before the songs are released, which is why he says, “Thank God for our record label and our team because my career would be doing this [as he makes a downward fall motion] if it were up to me on how to release songs.

In other genres of music, rap in particular, they often successfully release new music suddenly and unexpectedly, but Thomas knows country music, for the most part, isn’t quite there yet. “There really is a strategy and there really is a hype factor,” explains Thomas, “Because if you write a song that you feel like is a single, if you’re Drake you can just drop it.  If you’re Thomas Rhett, you can’t. There are things that you kind of have to set up and get people excited about and really let radio and your fans know that, hey, this is coming. Can we please make this like a big deal?”

However, during the first several months of the pandemic, Thomas wrote dozens of new songs, and since everything was kind of turned on its head, in terms of how the music business usually operates, he didn’t wait to share the new songs with his fans.  Whether he was doing an Instagram live, or just recording a video of himself sitting on his couch, Thomas was sharing acoustic versions of his new songs with fans, who were eating them up.  While they weren’t studio produced versions of the songs that fans could instantly stream or download, Thomas says, “I think we’re not too far away from being able to do that.  As time goes, I think that you’ll see things like that happen a lot more often.

One of the songs Thomas shared early with his fans on social media is “What’s Your Country Song,” which received such a big reaction, that he decided to make it his latest single.
