(AUDIO) TIM McGRAW’S CAR WAS HIS VERSION OF A CELL PHONE WHEN HE WAS GROWING UP

NEW SINGLE – “7500 OBO”

Tim McGraw’s latest single, “7500 OBO” is about a guy who has to sell his truck because it has too many memories of his ex-girlfriend in it, so we wondered if Tim had any memories of his own car or truck when he was growing up, and he explained that having a car as a teenager meant he could stay in touch and communicate with his friends.  “I guess to use a little bit of a metaphor, like I think our cell phone was our car back then,” says Tim.  “You could rarely get somebody on a landline cause kids were always out doing stuff, and we didn’t have a way to communicate unless you got in your car and you drove to your buddy’s house or you met somewhere.”

Tim thinks technology and having a million different ways to communicate these days makes some kids less anxious to get their driver’s license and get a car. “It’s a little different now, I think, with kids. I know with my own kids, like my youngest daughter it took us forever just to get her to want to get her driver’s license.  Because I think they’re communicating so much easier now.”

Besides having a way to keep up with his buddies, Tim’s teenage car was his ticket to the world.  “The car represented freedom to me when I was a kid,” says Tim. “I mean that was your chance to get out and just explore and sort of grow up.”
