When you’ve been a band as long as Eli Young Band has, your career stats can start to get pretty impressive. For instance, the guys were recently surprised by the streaming service Pandora with the news that their songs have collectively been listened to over two billion times on that one platform. Trying to wrap their head around that number is a little challenging. Lead singer Mike Eli says, “It really is strange to hear some of the numbers sometimes. When someone says that just on one platform you’ve been heard 2.2 billion times, you just don’t know what to think.”
One way to try to put it in perspective is to compare yourself to other artists. So Mike says when you hear your songs have been listened to billions of times, “Then it’s like, ‘Well I wanna see the other numbers. I wanna see how we fit into those numbers.’ Then you see the other folks that are on that list, and it’s pretty amazing.”
Even if Eli Young Band can’t fathom that people are listening to their songs billions and billions of times, it’s definitely a nice reminder that people are actually listening to and loving their music. “Sometimes you need that little kick in the butt,” Mike says. “We all seek some reassurance sometimes in what you do. And you put so much of yourself in your music, and to know that people are loving it that much means a lot.”
