CURRENT SINGLE: “You Didn’t”
Brett Young‘s latest single, “You Didn’t,” is about a guy saying the kindest goodbye to a woman who didn’t reciprocate his love. It seems like such a mature and understanding response to the situation, but Brett says, “I think it’s assumed that he’s lying in the song, but for her sake. He still loves her and cares about her, and nobody really did anything wrong, and he’s aware of that. So, even though he’s heartbroken, he’s still trying to take care of her in their kind of exit from the relationship.”
He definitely doesn’t see the guy as having just been broken up with and having that kind of response. “I think if there is a situation where it’s possible for this to be an immediate reaction, it’s somebody that saw it coming and was prepared with the right answer.”
When Brett thinks of the guy in “You Didn’t” and how well he’s handling having his heart broken, he says, “I could see how it could feel like down the road and you’ve already had the angry response and you’re finally ready to say the right thing or the nice thing. But I think the way we wrote this was like, in a way that he doesn’t mean a single word he’s saying. He just knows what she needs to hear and he doesn’t want her to feel guilty about walking away.”
If only every breakup were so thoughtful.
