“I wrote the song ‘Don’t Mess with Exes’ with my producer, Brandon Hood, and with the super talented Nicolle Galyon. I came into the studio that day and I kind of had these different Texas titles, and we wrote like three different versions. And we’re like, do we want to say the word Texas? Do we want to do all this in the verse and then not tell ‘em until the chorus? Like we dug hard for this song. And then we land on ‘Don’t Mess with Exes,’ and we’re like, whoa, whoa, whoa, like, wait a minute. Has nobody done this yet? Like, how is this not already happened? And so we’re like, we think we just struck gold, but we’ve done so much work finding it in our brains that we didn’t really like, appreciate or understand the song that we had just written. And I get the demo, and I play it, and we all just looked at each other, and we’re like, ‘Wait a minute. This is really awesome!’”
