(AUDIO) Rascal Flatts Doesn’t Want To Get Stuck In A Musical Rut

Rascal Flatts’ latest single, “Payback,” has a little more aggressive, different groove than some of the songs they’ve released in the past, but that’s exactly what they wanted to do with the music on their latest album, Rewind. Gary LeVox says after 14 years it can be a challenge to find new ways to approach songwriting, but it’s also difficult to find songs that don’t sound like things they’ve recorded before. He says, “A lot of song writers, when they think Rascal Flatts they go ‘boom’ and they pitch you a Rascal Flatts song. But everything starts to sound like ‘Me and My Gang’ or ‘Fast Cars and Freedom’ or things you’ve already done. So when you hear something that’s may be the same sentiment, but musically it’s a little bit different, that’s the kinda things that really grabbed our attention. We kinda took those songs and expanded on them.”

Lyrically Gary jokes, “We’ve always been suckers for a positive message. We’ll kill ya in a song too. We’ll get ya married, divorced, so it’s full-service.”

Rascal Flatts – different writing of songs :46
Gary LeVox – “With us being song writers, we know what we love. Sometimes it’s hard to write it in a way you haven’t written it before. And a lot of song writers, when they think Rascal Flatts they go ‘boom’ and they pitch you a Rascal Flatts song. But everything starts to sound like ‘Me and My Gang’ or ‘Fast Cars and Freedom’ or things you’ve already done. So when you hear something that’s may be the same sentiment, but musically it’s a little bit different, that’s the kinda things that really grabbed our attention. We kinda took those songs and expanded on them. We’ve always been suckers for a positive message. We’ll kill ya in a song too. We’ll get ya married, divorced, so it’s full-service. We get ya all the way there.”
