(AUDIO) A Thousand Horses Takes An All Or Nothing Approach When Choosing Songs To Record

A Thousand Horses believes when it comes to choosing songs for their albums, everybody has to agree before they’ll record something. According to Bill Satcher, “I don’t think we choose to record a song unless we unanimously agree on it.”

Michael Hobby adds, “It’s a best song wins kind of policy. We all have to enjoy the song and like the song and want to play it.”

Some groups employ a majority rules policy when it comes to choosing songs, but Zach Brown says, “There’s not a song on the album that one of us is like … ‘I didn’t really wanna cut that song, but everyone else wanted to.’”

In addition to all the guys in the band liking the songs, they also value the opinions of their fans when choosing what to put on their album. “Luckily, being a touring band, we had the opportunity to travel, play the songs live and really test them out for the fans,” explains Zach. He says, “That’s the ultimate factor. It’s A) is this fun to play on stage? Does it feel good playing it? And B) do people respond to it? Do they like it? So, that was really the main way we chose the songs.”

One of the songs they unanimously agreed on is their new single, “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial.”

A Thousand Horses – how all four choose songs :44
Michael Hobby – “It’s a best song wins kind of policy. We all have to enjoy the song and like the song and want to play it.”

Bill Satcher – “I don’t think we choose to record a song unless we unanimously agree on it.”

Zach Brown – “Yeah, there’s not a song on the album that one of us is like, oh I don’t really…I didn’t really wanna cut that song, but everyone else wanted to. We wrote a ton of songs for this album and these are the 13 that made that cut where we all were like, this feels good, and luckily, being a touring band, we had the opportunity to travel, play the songs live and really test them out for the fans, ‘cause that’s the ultimate factor. It’s A) is this fun to play on stage? Does it feel good playing it? And B) do people respond to it? Do they like it? So, that was really the main way we chose the songs.”
