Brantley Gilbert released his latest album, the Devil Don’t Sleep, back in February, and the deluxe version of the album contains 26 songs, only one of which Brantley didn’t have a hand in writing, because it’s a Hank Williams, Jr. cover. Not every artist writes their own songs, and Brantley says, “I’m very, very appreciative to the singers and the artists in this business who understand that they are not writers, and not trying to be writers, that just want to give writing credit to where it’s due.”
For Brantley, it’s necessary for him to write the songs he sings because he says, “I feel like where my strength is, where what it is about me that works, is that I sing things that I write. So I write things that are things that I’m able to sing. I write with those other talented people in town and I’m able to come together with them and tell my story and I’m able to have a hand in it.”
Brantley actually co-wrote his latest single, The Weekend, entirely over the phone with Andrew DeRoberts, a guy he’d never met before. It was a first for Brantley, but the result was a great song.
