When Brantley Gilbert and Lindsay Ell were recording their top ten duet, “What Happens in a Small Town,” Brantley recorded his part first, but he wasn’t able to be in the studio with Lindsay when she recorded her part, so he did the next best thing. He says, “I was texting and calling …”
Lindsay says, “I know. I remember you were facetiming Dan and I didn’t even know. I was in the vocal booth and Brantley and Dan were talking.”
Getting to create such a great song with Brantley was awesome enough, but then, Lindsay says, “To be able to be in the studio with Dan Huff, I mean, as a producer and as a guitar player, I mean he’s a legend in his own right. So, it was definitely a bucket list moment for me to record with him.”
It was Brantley’s label head and president, Scott Borchetta, who first suggested Lindsay for the song and made the phone call to ask her. Brantley jokes that he didn’t make the call himself because he was afraid Lindsay would have said no. Lindsay insists, “I wouldn’t have said no, Brantley! Your mom could have called me, and I would have said yes.”
With a grin on his face, Brantley justifies his reluctance to pick up the phone to ask Lindsay to be on the song because he says, “I have rejection issues.”

And to be able to be in the studio with Dan Huff, I mean, as a producer and as a guitar player, I mean he’s a legend in his own right. So, it was definitely a bucket list moment for me to record with him.”
Brantley – “And she killed it. And I would have called myself, but I was afraid she’d say no.”
