Brantley Gilbert’s latest single, what happens in a small town, is a duet with Lindsay Ell, and Brantley reveals that the song was actually a last-minute addition to the new album that he is planning to release later this year. “We were almost to the end of the record where I go to Scott Borchetta … you know I thought I had a really solid group of songs. I turned it in and he listened and he said, ‘Dude, it’s a great body of work, it’s an awesome album, I just don’t know if I have that one. We’ve got singles, I don’t know if I have the single.’”
Brantley got together with some of his songwriting buddies and came up with that missing song, which turned out to be “What Happens in a Small Town.” Once the song was complete, Brantley says, “From the time we got the first verse done it was just leaning towards a duet. I’d never done one and we kind of just got excited about it, and I don’t think that excitement ever stopped.”
Chances are, Brantley, his co-writers and Lindsay Ell are all still very excited because “What Happens in a Small Town” is currently sitting in the top 15 on the charts.

“We were almost to the end of the record where I go to Scott Borchetta … you know I thought I had a really solid group of songs. I turned it in and he listened and he said, ‘Dude, it’s a great body of work, it’s an awesome album, I just don’t know if I have that one. We’ve got singles I don’t know if I have the single.’ I said okay, and I got on the phone and called Rhett Akins and Brock Barryhill. We got together and went out on the road, and this happened to be an idea that Brock and Josh Dunn had started tweaking on a little bit. He brought it up, and I mean from the time we got the first verse done it was just leaning towards a duet. I’d never done one and we kind of just got excited about it, and I don’t think that excitement ever stopped.”
