If he’s in many ways working things out for himself, he recognizes it’s worth the time and the emotional tumult to see what’s at this kind of song’s heart. After all these years, and all those #1s, the Jefferson, Georgian believes it’s the complicated stuff that lasts and helps us grow.

“Very seriously, I take song writing very seriously. There are times when you can have a little more fun, it depends on the song. There are certain songs that are more lighthearted, that a lot of times write themselves a lot faster. And then you have your heavier songs that are really – not only are you dragging yourself through the mud trying to find the right words to tell somebody. Really to me it’s almost like a journal entry, some of these songs are, like you’re talking to yourself. Feel like you’re living and learning.”
