(AUDIO) BRANTLEY GILBERT’S SONGWRITING ALLOWS HIM TO LIVE JUST OUTSIDE THE BOX

current single: “OVER WHEN WE’RE SOBER” featuring Ashley Cooke

Brantley Gilbert’s music has been known to have a rock edge to it, but really, Brantley’s music runs the gamut from tender ballads to gospel-influenced songs, to songs that have a little bit of a pop flavor to them, like his latest single with Ashley Cooke, “Over When We’re Sober.” Brantley feels like he’s always lived just outside of the straight-down-the-middle country music box, but his diversity isn’t about trying to cross over into other formats or get exposure outside of country, it’s about being authentically who he is as a writer and an artist.

Brantley Gilbert – able to write outside box :41

“I don’t know that there is that much of a massive crossover. For as long as we’ve been doing this, man, we’ve always known where we belong. There’s a box, right? As long as we’re outside of that box, we kind of know where we belong. And, man, honestly, as a writer through the years, especially more recently, man, I’ve always tried to let a song be what it wants to be as a writer. And I’ve always considered myself more of a writer than I have an artist in ways. And that’s allowed me to kind of stay outside of the box and to write some stuff that may have, you know, a heavy rock influence or even a hip hop influence or something like that. I feel like a lot of times it’s not as abrasive coming from us. We’re unapologetic about it one, but two, it’s something we’ve been doing for a long time.”
