While Brett Young’s latest single, “Lady,” is making its way up the charts, he just celebrated his fourth #1 song, “Mercy,” being certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, which means it has been downloaded the equivalent of three million times, which is a huge accomplishment. Brett believes the song has been so successful over the past two years because it’s about a feeling, that unfortunately, so many people can relate to. “I think everybody’s been through that,” says Brett. “I’ve been through that a number of times.”
While a lot of Brett’s songs are based on specific, personal experiences, Brett explains that with “Mercy,” “I don’t think it was specifically personal – and by that I mean it wasn’t about any one specific situation – because I think every relationship there’s one person feeling that way. Breakups are uneven. And so the person that was ready for it, prepared for it, is doing fine immediately after it. That person’s the one checking in to like want to have coffee two weeks later. And you’re getting that text going, ‘Can you just leave me alone so I can heal.’”
Fortunately, all of those breakups that inspired Brett to write “Mercy,” helped lead Brett to where he is today, a happily married family man with his wife Taylor and their baby girl Presley, who were the specific real-life inspirations for his latest song, “Lady.”
Brett Young – how personal was Mercy :36
“I think everybody’s been through that. I’ve been through that a number of times. And so the reason I don’t think it was specifically personal – and by that I mean it wasn’t about any one specific situation – is because I think every relationship there’s one person feeling that way. Breakups are uneven. And so the person that was ready for it, prepared for it, is doing fine immediately after it. That person’s the one checking in to like want to have coffee two weeks later. And you’re getting that text going, ‘Can you just leave me alone so I can heal.’ And so, I’ve been through that. I’m always on the over-emotional side of a relationship. If I decide to be in, I’m all the way in. And so, if it ends, I’m all the way crushed. So I think anybody that’s gone through a breakup when they were on the bad end of it can relate to it.”
