Brett Young will deliver his very personal self-titled debut album this Friday. Brett says, “This album is across the board kind of my heart and my life.” While the first two singles he’s released off the album, “Sleep Without You” and “In Case You Didn’t Know,” are romantic love songs, Brett wants fans to know there’s a lot more to the album. “There are happy songs on the back half of the record. But there are some tearjerkers on the back side of the record and I just hope that people’s experience with it is that those are there because that’s another truth of my life and things that I’ve been through and another way that I would like to connect through music. And so, I hope people’s experience continues to be that they feel like they see and get to know a lot of me with this record.”
Brett’s desire to help people get to know him better is what ties his debut album together. He says, “I wanted to make sure that if there was a common thread it was honesty and accuracy and that if I was telling my story I was telling it to a T. It’s really easy to have a concept and then go as far left or as far right as you need to, to make the song as good as it can be. And I think for me the song is only as good as it can be if it’s accurate. And so that ended up being the common thread throughout for me was that I wrote from a place of experience so that people listening can get to know me.”
There is definitely plenty of romance on Brett’s debut album, and some people even call him ‘the romance guy,’ and he’s okay with that. Brett says, “I’m a hundred percent OK with people having whatever take they have. If I felt like any of this was me not being true to myself then I would be worried about the reaction. But at this point I made it clear that my goal with the first record is to put myself out there and I feel like that’s what I’ve done. And so any reaction is completely fair and acceptable. And so if that’s how some people feel about it that’s absolutely okay because we wanted to be honest here and we did it.”
Not only does Brett plan to buy a digital copy of his album, but he’s also looking forward to picking up a physical copy in a store. He says, “I don’t know why this is, but one of the coolest things for me will be seeing it on a shelf physically for the first time. And I remember when I was first kind of falling in love with music and first started buying music with my own money, that was my favorite thing was to go in, like on the album release day and get you know … I would always walk the aisles of CDs and just I was in love with music and I loved just like knowing what was out there and stuff and so the idea of mine kind of being amidst all of that is really cool.”

“This album is across the board kind of my heart and my life. The one risk that we probably ran a little bit by choosing these first two singles as the first two singles is that these are both very happy love songs. And I just hope that people don’t develop expectations of 12 songs that are dance around the kitchen, happy soul mate songs because there’s so much of life that is the opposite of that, and so many things that I’ve been through that aren’t that. There are happy songs on the back half of the record. But there are some tearjerkers on the back side of the record and I just hope that people’s experience with it is that those are there because that’s another truth of my life and things that I’ve been through and another way that I would like to connect through music. “I think at first I was trying to find a theme. I like, as a listener, I like albums like that where there’s a common thread throughout. And then as we were choosing songs and I was writing songs for the record I kind of realized that the songs that I was wanting to make the record were just the ones that were a very clear picture of me. And my intent kind of shifted. There’s still a common thread but it’s not a storyline it’s more of a get to know Brett Young. And I wanted to make sure that if there was a common thread it was honesty and accuracy and that if I was telling my story I was telling it to a T rather than – it’s really easy to have a concept and then go as far left or as far right as you need to, to make the song as good as it can be.
