Brett Young grew up in Southern California, which might seem like an unlikely place for a country singer to grow up, but he says, “Growing up in Southern California I was definitely the odd man out listening to country music. All my friends were listening to punk rock and R&B and I liked all of that, but country was always the favorite for me.”
The moment that cinched Brett’s decision to be a country music singer was when he heard Tim McGraw’s “Don’t Take the Girl.” He says, “I knew that country music was the kind of music that I wanted to make if I ever got into music. So that’s how a kid from Southern California ends up in the country genre.”
