When Brett Young writes a song, it’s personal. He has to have lived it, or at least be able to relate to it on a personal level. Sometimes songwriting can be healing for Brett. In fact, he says, “I think writing is therapeutic for me.”
But sometimes, that therapy is so personal that those songs Brett writes aren’t meant for anyone but him to ever see or hear. Brett confesses, “I have three songs that I’ve written in the last two years that are so important, and personal to me, and I love them very much, and I don’t think they’re even close to good enough to ever be heard. But they’re meaningful to me because I needed to get that out that day.”
Brett has written plenty of painfully personal songs that he has recorded and put out into the world, such as “Mercy” and “Like I Loved You,” but not all of his personal songs are bummers, like his latest single, “Catch,” which is all about someone catching your eye and your heart when you’re not even looking.
