CURRENT SINGLE: “You Didn’t”
Brett Young is very expressive with his emotions in his songwriting, and until a couple of years ago, he was very much the same way in his real life. “I’m kind of open book, no filter type of guy, to a fault probably.”
However, over the last couple of years, Brett says he has managed to dial back his need to share every thought and emotion that comes into his head the minute he thinks it or feels it. “I’ve noticed that after having kids, I might be a little less so,” says Brett. “I might be a little bit more reserved with my emotions or opinions. And I think part of that is just growing up, too. You know, you don’t just have to blabber everything you’re feeling all the time, cause you might get over it and realize you shouldn’t of said it.”
Brett uses the analogy of giving your mind time to realize that your stomach is full, to explain how he tries to approach expressing his emotions these days. He says, “It’s almost like that thing when you sit down at dinner. Like, eat a little bit, sit down, see if you feel full. You might feel full in a few minutes. You know, it’s kind of like that with emotion sometimes. It’s like, I’m feeling this so strongly I need to say it right now, and then 10 minutes later you’re like, I wish I hadn’t said that.”
So, whether it’s fatherhood or growing up or simply realizing that immediately saying and sharing everything he’s feeling in the moment may not be the best way to operate, Brett says, “I feel like as I get older I’m a little bit less that way, but for the most part, if you ask me how I’m feeling, you’re going to get a very honest answer.”
