Brett Young is from Southern California, so his 4th of Julys were all about the beach. He says, “I used to spend every single 4th of July down in Newport Beach, which is the neighboring city to Huntington where I grew up. And they closed down the whole peninsula, and it’s just a foot traffic only no cars, and you just get down there on your beach cruiser and you ride around.”
What made riding his bike around so fun, is that Brett says, “All the houses on the boardwalk there are having some sort of party on their patio, and you’re gonna know somebody every fifth or sixth house. And you just kind of drive down, pop in, see your friends, and by the time you’re done you’re sunburned and exhausted and you ride back up the hill and you call it a day.”
The area where Brett lived in Southern California also offered spectacular views of multiple fireworks displays. While Brett hasn’t been able to celebrate a Southern California beach 4th of July in a while because he’s been working around the holiday for the past several years. But once the Covid-19 pandemic subsides and it’s safe to travel and gather with your friends, Brett says, “I think if we’re ever not playing a show on 4th of July we’re probably going to be headed back to Southern California to do it again.”
This year, Brett will likely be celebrating 4th of July in Nashville, where he lives now, with the two women in his life who inspired his latest single, “Lady” – his wife Taylor and his baby girl Presley.
Brett Young – 4th of July So Cal :41
“Talking about Fourth of July, I used to spend every single Fourth of July down in Newport Beach, which is the neighboring city to Huntington where I grew up. And they closed down the whole peninsula, and it’s just a foot traffic only no cars, and you just get down there on your beach cruiser and you ride around, and all the houses on the boardwalk there are having some sort of party on their patio and you’re gonna know somebody every fifth or sixth house. And you just kind of drive down, pop in, see your friends, and by the time you’re done you’re sunburned and exhausted and you ride back up the hill and you call it a day. And from the bluffs you can see fireworks in both Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach and Huntington to your right. And so, I did that every year until I moved, and I think if we’re ever not playing a show on 4th of July we’re probably going to be headed back to Southern California to do it again.”
