CURRENT SINGLE: “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” w/ Ashley McBryde
Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde co-wrote their new duet, “Never Wanted to be That Girl,” with Shane McAnally, and they realize some people might see them as an unlikely duo. “We are very different,” says Ashley. “She’s tall and blonde and kind of on the quieter side and more soft-spoken, and I’m short and tattooed and brunette and like, in everybody’s face.”
They realized their opposites attract dynamic worked a few years ago when they were playing a guitar pull together at The Crystal Palace in Bakersfield with Jimmie Allen. “I found out that Carly was a germaphobe,” recalls Ashley. “Jimmie and I picked on you a little bit during the show, and I thought I had really offended her. But it turned out that that was kind of what caused our friendship to mold.”
Carly agrees that Ashley’s teasing during that guitar pull over her fear of germs was what broke the ice for their friendship, but she laughs as she recalls that while it wss happening, “I was standing there PANICKING!”
Ashley was convinced that afterward, Carly was probably like, “What a jerk! I can’t believe you did that to me on stage.”
But ultimately, it was the start of a great friendship that has blossomed into a great musical partnershgi
