For a long time, the conversation in country music was centered around the fact that women weren’t getting the kind of exposure or having the kind of success that men were on country radio and on the charts. But if what’s been happening recently is any indication, things might finally be starting to change. Since February, four females have scored #1 songs in country music, including Maren Morris with “The Bones,” Ingrid Andress with “More Hearts Than Mine,” Gabby Barrett with “I Hope,” and Carly Pearce (with Lee Brice), who just landed at #1 last week with “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” When we asked Carly about this recent run turn of events, she said, “I feel like it’s a really good time to be a female, and I really felt like we needed to start to change the conversation to the fact that there are a lot of girls making headway.”
“I Hope You’re Happy Now” is Carly’s second #1 song of her career, but she still considers herself fairly new, and she says, “I feel like those two girls (Ingrid and Gabby) doing that back to back like that, and then for me to come in behind them … I mean, that’s three new females that hit number one, and two with their debut single. And, I don’t know, I just feel like actions speak louder than words and we’re showin’ them.”
Carly has been busy working on brand new music, and even though she just released her self-titled sophomore album a little over four months ago, this past Valentine’s Day, she recently revealed that the next song she releases to country radio will be a brand new song, not from her latest album.
