CURRENT SINGLE: “Love Talking”
The members of the Eli Young Band met when they were in college, and they were all pursuing degrees to do other things before they decided to make music their full-time careers. Bassist Jon Jones got his degree in psychology, which seems like it could come in handy when dealing with the band dynamic. “I don’t know. I’m sure maybe somewhere along the line,” he says.
Lead singer Mike Eli thinks Jon’s psychology degree has definitely helped in certain situations when members of the band have needed a level-headed moderator. “I think there have been times where we’ve been divided, the four of us, and sometimes it takes somebody with a little bit of some level thinking to say, hey, let’s take a step back and remember what the important part is.”
Mike also knows that opinions and personalities can sometimes run hot in the group. “I mean, we’re musicians. We tend to be all over the place, and we can, some of us – especially me – can be a little bit hot headed at times. And I think it takes somebody that can cool things down to get through to what’s important about the moment, whatever it might be, and why the arguments happening.”
The good news is, even though Jon didn’t pursue psychology as a career, getting his degree wasn’t in vain, because it’s likely part of the reason the Eli Young Band has been able to successfully stick together for over 20 years.
