There was a time in country music when awards shows practically had to make up duos to round out the vocal Duo category, but these days there are plenty of great duos competing for awards, although Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line says, “I don’t know if I feel too much of the competition, personally, with the other duos. I mean I genuinely feel like in this genre, I think that’s one of the things that we love so much about country music and this genre, is it really does kind of feel like a big family.”
Of course, FGL wants to win awards and sell out concerts and score #1 songs, but Tyler says if there is any kind of competition, it’s a friendly competition. “I mean we’re always competing with everybody. We’re competing with ourselves, we’re competing with anybody, and we actually welcome a good challenge or a good competition and somebody that can push us a little bit,” says Tyler.
Tyler just produced several songs on LOCASH’s brand new album, and FGL is bringing Dan & Shay out on tour this summer, and Tyler says, “I also think it’s really cool, the camaraderie, the family, the brotherhood that country music allows you to have because at the end of the day there’s not too many people that can really relate a hundred and ten percent to be BK and I’s lifestyle except Dan and Shay, except Chris and Preston, and guys like that. So, really the bond is there and it’s really cool and especially for good guys like that. Like we just root ‘em on and we want them to win and I don’t feel a ton of competition necessarily.”
Brian Kelley jokes that they’re happy to see Dan & Shay winning awards, because that just makes their upcoming Can’t Say I Ain’t Country Tour that much stronger. Besides, even with all the competition, Florida Georgia Line continues to enjoy a very successful career, including plenty of hit songs, like their current top 20 song, “Talk You Out of It,” which is continuing to climb the charts. Plus, this Sunday they are nominated for three ACM Awards, including Duo of the Year and Musical Event and Single of the Year for “Meant to Be.”
