Jennifer Nettles definitely stretched out musically and pushed herself on her latest album, Playing with Fire, but it was more of a byproduct of trying to be authentic. She says, “I’m always pushing myself as a person, and the way that art then imitates life and specifically my art and my life, because of that, I would say that, yes, I pushed myself in ways. But really, what I wanted to do was keep myself open to be even more and more authentic on this record and to share and talk about the themes that are happening in my life.”
While not every song on Jennifer’s album is autobiographical, like her latest single, “Unlove You,” the emotions are real and authentic, and that’s true of all the songs on her album. She says, “Even if it’s something as funny and pointing the subversive finger at what it feels like to do the juggle of the working mom in ‘Drunk in Heels’ or all the way to the actual soul-searching of ‘Way Back Home’. I wanted to keep myself open in that way and pushed myself to be that honest.”
Playing with Fire is available now, wherever music is sold.
