Jennifer Nettles will release her new solo album, Playing with Fire, on May 13th. This is her second solo album since taking a break from Sugarland, and she says when you compare the two projects, there is a big difference. With her first solo project, Jennifer says, “When I recorded ‘That Girl’, and even when I wrote it, I was pregnant and had had my first child and when I recorded it Magnus was five months old and I was really just feeling like I wanna sing. It had been a while since I’d done that. I want to go through this process, but I wasn’t really clear on a direction that I wanted to go for myself as what would become and what continues to become my solo voice. I just wanted to sing and feel a little bit like myself.”
While that first project was about getting back to her love of singing and rediscovering her creative process after having a baby and focusing on being a mom, Jennifer says, “This project, ‘Playing With Fire’, is most certainly for me more intentional and I think you will find there’s a lot more fun in it, there’s a lot more irreverence in it and there’s a lot more parts of my personality that just weren’t available to me, frankly, at the time that I recorded the first album.”
Playing with Fire will feature Jennifer’s current single, “Unlove You.”

“There are a ton of differences that I think one will find between my first solo project ‘That Girl’ and this sophomore effort, which is called ‘Playing With Fire’, in that, when I recorded ‘That Girl’, and even when I wrote it, I was pregnant and had had my first child and when I recorded it Magnus was five months old and I was really just feeling like I wanna sing. It had been a while since I’d done that. I want to go through this process, but I wasn’t really clear on a direction that I wanted to go for myself as what would become and what continues to become my solo voice. I just wanted to sing and feel a little bit like myself. The whole process of motherhood is so changing and such a metamorphosis, that I needed some of that grounding of what I knew as myself, which was to be a singer/songwriter. So that project, ‘That Girl’, was, it was a bit of an exploration for me, and just an opportunity to express and perform. This project, ‘Playing With Fire’, is most certainly for me more intentional and I think you will find there’s a lot more fun in it, there’s a lot more irreverence in it and there’s a lot more parts of my personality that just weren’t available to me, frankly, at the time that I recorded the first album.”
WHAT SHE’S DOING THIS WEEK – APRIL 4, 2016 – MONDAY
- Jennifer Nettles plays a show in Branson on Friday (4/8).
- Over the weekend, she was in Las Vegas to host an Outnumber Hunger event.
- Her new single is called “Unlove You.” She recently premiered the video for the song at CMT. Watch it
