Lady Antebellum’s new single, “Champagne Night,” is the song they ended up picking to record when they appeared on the NBC show Songland. Dave Haywood says, “That was such a fun show. I mean, getting to do Songland was a big honor. We watched Season One and we were fans of the show, and so when we got asked to do it we were all about it.”
The show gives four aspiring songwriters the chance to perform a song they’ve written to a star artist, and by the end of the show, the artist picks one song to record and release immediately on streaming and download services. Dave says, “I love it so much. I love that they support songwriters, it’s songwriting focused. I mean, that’s how (Lady Antebellum) started as a band was writing together as a trio. And I really felt for all these songwriters that walked in.”
“Champagne Night” was written by aspiring Canadian country music singer Madeline Merloe, and was originally called “I’ll Drink to That.” But after working with show advisor Shane McAnally, with input from the other advisors and Lady Antebellum, “Champagne Night” was born.
