Maddie & Tae both celebrated their 20th birthdays earlier this year, and although they’re still fairly young, they’re often able to infuse a lot of emotion and experience into their songwriting which seems a lot older than their 20 years on this earth. Tae Dye says, “High school definitely makes you go through situations that you don’t necessarily want to go through.”
Maddie Marlow agrees, and she adds, “Moving away from home at 17, on your own, with no family, no friends, no one, that makes you go through a lot too. People are surprised. Young people go through a lot more than you think.”
If some of Maddie & Tae’s songwriting comes across as more mature than their actual ages, Tae says it may be because, “We’re old souls. So we think a little bit older than our actual age.”
Their new single, “Shut Up and Fish,” is more about having fun and telling a guy to stop trying to make a move and just fish, than trying to get deep or tap into their old souls.
