Midland’s latest song, “Mr. Lonely,” is a rollicking barroom anthem, and guitarist Jess Carson says, “We wanted to have this kind of Dwight Yoakam, kind of uptempo feel, so it kind of started with that intro lick. There’s lots of those types of licks in country music and I guess the hard part is coming up with one that’s your own, cause they’re all sort of like standard. You know, you got like the ‘Boot Scootin’ Boogie’ and the ‘Guitars Cadillacs’ type of stuff.”
Mark Wystrach thinks of Clint Black or George Strait’s “The Fireman” when he thinks of the sound they were going for with “Mr. Lonely,” and Jess says, “But we like those songs because they’re fun to play live and they’re not the easiest songs to write on an acoustic guitar. But we’ve put that song in our live set and it’s really fun to play live.”
“Mr. Lonely” is the first release off Midland’s sophomore album, which will be released later this year.
