In normal times, Midland spends a good part of the year on the road and away from home and their kids, which creates a challenge for bass player Cameron Duddy, when it comes to parenting his four-year-old son, Kitt. A friend of Cameron’s told him, “‘Just remember, dude, you’re not their friend, you have to be a parent.”
Cameron knows his friend is right, but he laughs and says, “That’s hard to do when you live on the road because you want to be loved and you don’t want them to resent you.”
One positive benefit of Midland being off the road because of the coronavirus is that Cam is getting to spend more time with his son, and he feels like eventually he’ll learn the fine art of parenting. “There is a fine line between being emotionally available and also the authoritarian,” Cam says, “and I’ll figure it out one day, I’m sure.”
While Midland isn’t being able to tour, they’re finding ways to stay in touch with their fans and continue promoting their latest single, “Cheatin’ Songs.”
