Mark Wystrach of Midland has always enjoyed a beautifully prepared, huge Thanksgiving meal by his mom, so when it came time for him to contribute a dish to his then fiancée, now wife Ty’s family Thanksgiving table, it was quite the ordeal. “I made potatoes au gratin for my fiancée’s family last Thanksgiving,” recalls Mark, “and it was kind of a big deal. It was like, our first Thanksgiving together. And I made the largest production over making potatoes au gratin. You would have thought that I’d somehow just landed, like the lunar rover.”
Not only was making the potatoes au gratin a big production, Mark says, “It took me probably total hours of time to prepare this au gratin, like seven and a half hours. I was exhausted and they turned out to be like, just mediocre at best.”
After that harrowing experience, Mark thinks back to all the amazing Thanksgiving spreads his mom prepared by herself, and he says, “Shout out to my mom who cooks for, at the ranch growing up, at least 30 people. And she would cook everything, all within 12 hours. She would prep all the pies, everything was from scratch. It was amazing. I don’t know how the hell she still does it.”
As for the other guys in Midland, Cameron Duddy is a pretty good cook, but Jess Carson, not so much. He says, “I’ve never cooked anything in my entire life.” In fact, Mark claims, “I saw Jess burn water once.”
Midland will get to spend Thanksgiving with their families before they fly across the ocean to perform seven shows in the UK and Netherlands.
